Sexual Assault Awareness Week

The Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton has a ton of great events going on from April 12-16 to mark Sexual Assault Awareness Week. Here’s the info so you can plan ahead and take part.

Monday, April 12th: Opening Reception with Silent Auction.
City Hall. 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Scheduled to speak: Mayor Stephen Mandel; Dr. Lise Gotell (U of A); Staff Sergeant Deb Jolly & Superintendent Danielle Campbell (EPS); Ted Kerr (writer, artist, actionist). MC’d by journalist Michelle Boden. Appetizers provided by Guru Restaurant & Bar.

Tuesday, April 13th: Film Screening of NO! The Rape Documentary
Stanley A. Milner Library. 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Produced and directed by Aishah Shahdiah Simmons, an incest and rape survivor, this groundbreaking feature length documentary offers
riveting testimonials from Black women rape survivors who defy victimization. Violence prevention advocates, theologians, sociologists, historians, anthropologists, and other leading scholars and human rights activists provide an interdisciplinary context with which to examine sexual violence in African-American communities. They also explore how rape is used as a weapon of homophobia.

Wednesday, April 14th: Open House.

Come visit SACE, see what we do, visit our counselling rooms and meet the staff. Presentation on SACE services and philosophy at

Thursday, April 15th: Art Show (Sale) & Open Mic
The ARTery. 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Art pieces, many for auction, exploring sexual violence and its impact, including hope and healing. Open mic will feature music and poetry performed by local artists. Sign up for the open mic in advance by emailing Or, sign up at the event at 7:15.

Friday, April 16th: Let’s Talk About Consent, Baby! Retro Dance Party
Dance and party to your favourite tunes from the ‘80s and ‘90s! Tickets available from March 18th, 2010. Tickets $15 in advance through SACE or Blackbyrd Myoozik. $20 at the door.
