Back to School Bill 44 Protest

From the facebook event, h/t to Straight Outta Edmonton for the links for the speakers.

When: TODAY! Wednesday, September 1 @ 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
Where: Alberta Legislature, 108 Street & 97 Avenue

The Queer Allied Network (QAN) is organizing a Back to School Demonstration in response to the implementation of Section 11.1 (formerly Section 9) of Bill 44 in Albertan schools this year. As students across the province head back to school on September 1st, one wonders what kind of educational environment they will be entering? Will students be allowed to learn about difference without facing fear and silence?

Participants of all backgrounds and identities will be joining together at the steps of the Legislature Building at 4:30 PM Wednesday, September 1st, to demonstrate that Bill 44 does not represent the views of all Albertans and that it should
be repealed.

Speeches from prominent political and community leaders will occur to highlight the issues surrounding Section 11.1 of Bill 44:

Laurie Blakeman, Liberal MLA, Edmonton – Centre
Rachel Notley, NDP MLA, Edmonton – Strathcona
Jan Buterman, fired from St. Albert Catholic school district for being transgender
Brendan Van Alstine, Social Worker & Candidate for Edmonton City Council, Ward 7
Chris LaBossiere, former member of the PC party who left the PCs over Bill 44.
