Late Night News – RCMP investigate Conservatives, Toronto Counciller ‘Hot Chicks’ Comment, National Aboriginal Day

RCMP are  investigating Conservative spending during the G8 after an auditor general’s report questioned whether the Conservatives mislead parliament.

Toronto Coun. John Parker is now ‘apologizing’ for a tweet in which he said he enjoys his job because it affords him the opportunity to meet “hot chicks.” If apologizing means avoiding all responsibility and suggesting it is others people’s problem that they found his oh-so-charming comment offensive.

June 21st was National Aboriginal Day. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) comments on the Conservative government’s poor record on Aboriginal issues in the country.

  • Putting a stop to the Kelowna Accord which represented a national consensus to end the persistence of poverty and shameful conditions of overcrowding, unsafe housing, crumbling infrastructure, and lack of access to safe, clean drinking water for Aboriginal peoples.
  • Lack of meaningful action to deal with the crisis of no access to clean water for many of Canada’s First Nations  communities.
  • Ignoring pleas to change the formula for funding First Nations schools, which are at a severe disadvantage when compared to other schools in the country.
  • Continuing to discriminate against Fist nations children by providing less child welfare benefits to those children living on reserves than to those living off reserves.

To add to that list, Stephen Harper has claimed that Canada does not have a colonial history. Also, after  a strong (and long) push from Canadians to sign the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, Canada endorsed it last fall but has failed to uphold that endorsement.
